Ribbed Metal or Board-and-Batten Siding?

Two wall profiles can give the same building very different character.

Illustrative building image. Project details vary by site and scope.

Siding influences the character of a post-frame building as much as its roof shape. Ribbed metal gives a familiar agricultural or shop look; board-and-batten creates a different vertical rhythm. Neither answer is automatically right for every building. The better choice follows the desired appearance, product details, and overall wall assembly.

Look beyond a small sample

A color chip cannot show how a full wall will feel. Look at the panel profile, the distance between visible lines, and the way corners, windows, and doors will be trimmed. A profile that looks subtle in a hand sample may become the dominant pattern on a long sidewall.

Compare the siding with the roof, wainscoting, fascia, and overhead doors. If the design uses two wall colors, decide where the transition happens and how trim will handle that joint. A clear elevation view helps more than a list of color names.

Specify the product, not just the style

“Board and batten” can refer to different materials and panel systems. The proposal should identify the actual manufacturer or approved equivalent, profile, finish, fastening approach, and matching trim. The same clarity matters for ribbed metal. Avoid assuming that two products with similar names have the same dimensions or details.

Ask how openings, corners, the lower wall, and the roof edge will be finished. These parts are visible every day and can affect both material quantities and the final appearance.

Keep the wall’s use in mind

Will the building be unconditioned storage, a heated shop, or a space with frequent washing or humidity? The planned use should inform the wall assembly and moisture strategy, not just the exterior skin. Ventilation, insulation, and interior finishes need to be considered together when comfort is a goal.

Explore Bontrager siding options and save examples of the profile and color combination you like. When you share a concept, include the wall and trim colors by name so the team can check product availability and prepare a consistent material list.
